PX to PT Converter

Convert CSS pixels to points. CSS fixes 96 px and 72 pt per inch, so pt = px × 0.75 and 16 px = 12 pt.

16 px = 12 pt · 24 px = 18 pt · 96 px = 72 pt

This ratio is fixed in CSS and does not depend on screen density.

Zero and negative lengths are supported; valid CSS properties have their own limits.

CSS units describe layout, not image pixels.

The result also includes equivalents in all six units.

Use the root element’s computed font size. For rem in the root’s own font-size, use its initial font size instead. 16 is an editable example.

For font-size, use the parent’s font size. For padding and most other lengths, use the element’s own computed font size.

Enter the target layout viewport width. vw uses the large viewport; this is not native screen resolution.

Enter the target large viewport height, with browser controls retracted. This tool does not calculate svh or dvh.

Use a decimal point, without commas. CSS values and references accept up to 4 decimal places.

These equivalents use your entered font and viewport sizes. They change when those references change.

For font-size in em, use the parent’s font size; for padding, use the element’s computed font size. rem uses the root font size, except on the root’s own font-size, where the initial font size is the reference.

CSS units do not measure image print PPI or the physical size of your screen. vw and vh use the large viewport; mobile browser controls can cover part of it.

Points on screen and in print

Points come from print typography. In CSS, 1 pt is exactly 1/72 of a CSS inch and 1 px is 1/96, so 1 pt = 4/3 px. Neither unit measures your physical screen; for printed output the CSS inch maps to a physical inch.

pt = px × 72 ÷ 96

Questions about this conversion

How many points is 16 px?

16 × 0.75 = 12 pt.

Is 1 pt bigger than 1 px?

Yes. In CSS 1 pt = 1.3333 px, because there are 72 points and 96 CSS pixels per CSS inch.

Does pt depend on DPI?

Not in CSS. The px-to-pt ratio is fixed. Print image PPI is a different measurement; use the pixels-to-inches converter for that.
